Is your chewing gum toxic?

Who doesn’t love a fresh piece of chewing gum? Thousands upon thousands of people chew gum every day, never once questioning what they are actually putting in their mouths.

Most chewing gums actually contain hazardous chemicals and toxins. In fact, the FDA considers chewing gum an over-the-counter drug.

One of the most dangerous substances in chewing gum is aspartame – which is made from several toxic chemicals. In the UK and Japan, gum frequently contains butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). The United States Department of Health and Human Services even considers this one to be a likely carcinogen, yet its still used in gum overseas.

Titanium dioxide is also frequently used to make gum white. Studies have found this particular agent to be the cause of many ailments, including liver dysfunction. Long-term exposure to titanium dioxide can lead to autoimmune disease and inflammatory conditions. There are many other toxic chemicals that can be found in chewing gum, but aspartame, BHT and titanium dioxide are by far the most widely used.
