Tammy notes that the bridge between oral health and human well-being is becoming narrower and narrower in the medical profession. “What’s exciting is to know that as a hygienist – we are bridging the gap between dentistry and medicine. In fact, today, dental hygienists are taking the lead role in managing the disease aspect of the mouth – as it relates to the rest of the body,” says Tammy. “But, there’s a big difference between a dental hygienist and a periotherapist. Only because, as a periotherapist (which is what I am) there’s much more training involved, there’s much more diagnostics involved and there’s much more education.”

Tammy recognizes that the mouth is part of a much larger ecosystem, the body. Poor dental hygiene doesn’t just effect the mouth, but the body as a whole. “There’s plenty of research out there that does show that the oral bacteria have some contribution to these degenerative diseases. The key is to get properly tested so that you can get to the root cause of your health problems. In my practice, we build an entire treatment plan around getting that pathogenic load to drop into a healthy range,” she added.

Tammy continues to be at the forefront of holistic oral health. She regularly attends courses and workshops from the Holistic Dental Association, the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology, ZYTO, Premier Research Labs, Simply Vibrant, the Integrative Health Symposium, Chirodontics, IntegraMed Academy, Body Talk Modules, Carolyn Myss,Gabrielle Roth, Sharon Salzberg, Eckhart Tolle, Debra Ford and Krishna Das.(1)
